Poles in Britain

“We spent 50 years under communism. I came here feeling I needed someone to take care of me, to help me. [...] Now I’m sure I can stand up. I’m not afraid.”

An interesting article (in the Christian Science Monitor) about Polish immigrants in Great Britain. Apparently they’re doing quite well there – and they’re a positive influence on their own country. Not the all too well known “brain drain” story. A lot of Poles return home after a few years with a changed mindset: demanding more and in this way raising levels.

The article also shows that immigration is often a good thing for countries which welcome immigration. In spite of this, there’s a lot of opposition to immigration in Britain and other European countries (not least in Germany) and immigrants are treated with little respect and a lot of suspicion.
